To be, or not to be?
That is the question…isn’t it?
As many times as we’ve heard this question, you’d figure it would represent something quite profound—and you’d be right.
As humans, we have the unique ability to choose whether or not to be alive. We have the ability to take our own lives, but we also have the ability to choose instead to really live. Since you’re alive right now, the question is: have you made the choice to live actively or passively? I would like to suggest that people who actively make the decision to live are often happier, healthier, and more successful people than those who do not.
The conscious decision of wanting to be alive and embracing all that comes with it allows us to put a new, greater context around our lives. The ultimate context is no longer simply the idea that we are alive, but is expanded into the idea that you’re making the incredible choice to be alive. All your decisions can then be made in this new paradigm of making a choice to be here and to get everything you can out of it.
It’s my belief that people who actively choose to live are then more active in all their choices. They rarely switch their lives or beliefs to ‘autopilot,’ they never pass their fates on to chance, and they know that the small decisions matter. For someone who chooses to live every day, the little joys in life that more passive people might miss are always standing out in vibrant display, there to be admired and fully experienced by the one that actively decides to experience them.
If you are not so active in your choices each day, I hope this can be a reminder that you chose today to be alive. Spend some time today reminding yourself of the magic of that choice, and all the joys out there waiting to be experienced.
Until next time,
PS: I was going to tie this into health and fitness but then I decided I’d let you decide what it ties in to and how.
